2KG of Batt Wash powder for mixing into a paste.
To prevent spills and glaze runs sticking on to, or soaking in to, kiln shelves which will contract and expand splitting the shelf.
DO NOT DO BOTH SIDES – you don’t want flakes to fall on to your work.
• Mix into a runny paste with water – to apply with a wide brush.
• Do not mix thick as it makes it harder for the material in the batt wash to grip into the pores of the shelf and stick during firing.
• Brush left to right in medium (not thick) thickness strokes
• Dry for an hour
• Turn the shelf 90 degrees and apply again across the previous strokes
• Dry for an hour
• Turn 45 degrees and apply again (in effect doing a diagonal stroke to the previous two layers)
• Dry overnight and then fire gently in the kiln to 500oC minimum.
• Can be done with the original kiln firing in / First Fire
• Re apply when you feel it is necessary – probably best to scrape off old flaky layer first.
• Shelves are usually cut with water jet cutters and contain a lot of moisture so all new shelves should be fired gently – no more than 100oC to 150oC per hour– to get all the steam out without it being restricted by clay sitting on it and cracking.
